The Department of Media and Communication at the University of Oslo was established in 1987 as a joint effort by the faculties of art and social science. The department's research activities cover a broad range of topics within media studies, including a special emphasis on "new media" and the convergence between media, information and telecommunication technologies. The department is responsible for bachelor's and master's programmes in Media Studies and a master's programme in Journalism in collaboration with Oslo University College. The department is also responsible for a three year's doctoral programme in Media Studies with about 15 PhD students in 2004. Currently the department has 15 full-time academic positions and a number of researchers on externally financed projects.
